Lagaan is a 2001 Indian sports-drama film directed by Ashutosh Gowariker and produced by Aamir Khan. The film stars Aamir Khan, Gracy Singh, and British actors Rachel Shelley and Paul Blackthorne in lead roles.
Set in 1893, the story revolves around a small village in British-ruled India where the villagers are burdened with high taxes, or "lagaan". When the ruthless British captain Russell (Paul Blackthorne) imposes an additional tax on the villagers, the protagonist Bhuvan (Aamir Khan) challenges him to a game of cricket, with the condition that if the villagers win, they will be exempted from paying taxes for three years.
Despite facing various challenges including lack of resources, opposition from the British officials, and internal conflicts among the villagers, Bhuvan and his team prepare for the match with the help of a British woman, Elizabeth (Rachel Shelley), who falls in love with Bhuvan.
Lagaan was widely acclaimed for its engaging storyline, powerful performances, and exceptional music composed by A. R. Rahman. The film was also a major commercial success and was nominated for the Academy Award for Best Foreign Language Film.
